Machogu’s Instructions to Students on KUCCPS Portal Course Selection
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened its portal for candidates who took their KCSE exams in 2022.
This announcement was made by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, who launched the portal on Wednesday and urged students to begin their applications.
A total of 173,137 students who achieved a mean grade of C+ and above in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination are eligible for admission to public universities in Kenya.
Those who scored C-plain and below will be directed to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
However, students who obtained a C+ or higher but prefer to join TVET institutions have the freedom to do so.
Machogu confirmed that KUCCPS had fulfilled all requirements, including the publication of fee details for all programs.
He emphasized that KUCCPS would ensure that all eligible students are placed in the respective programs of their choice.
On the other hand, students with a grade of C plain and below will be accommodated in TVET institutions.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu stated that the placement of students will be based on their merit and the availability of space in universities.
Once placed, students are expected to contact their respective institutions to obtain joining instructions and guidance on applying for government scholarships and loans from the University Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb).
To facilitate the application process, the Ministry of Education has collaborated with the Huduma Secretariat, enabling students to apply for programs at any of the 52 Huduma centers.
Officials at these centers will provide support to students throughout the application process.
Additionally, KUCCPS will dispatch teams to selected universities to offer assistance directly.
CS Machogu highlighted that the portal provides information about the cost of courses at each university.
This information will help students make informed decisions based on their family’s income.
Machogu assured that the government has the capacity to admit all students who qualify for higher education.
With these measures in place, candidates now have the opportunity to select their preferred courses and institutions through the KUCCPS portal, ensuring a smooth and accessible application process.
Machogu stated, “KUCCPS will place all qualified candidates into various programs based on merit and their university choices, including colleges, national polytechnics, and other TVET institutions.”
He further explained that students placed in public universities will be eligible for government scholarships and loans, while those selecting private universities will only be eligible for government loans.
Emphasizing the importance of addressing students’ financial needs, Machogu stated that each student will be treated according to their level of need, ensuring that deserving students are not denied the opportunity to pursue higher education.
The placement process, originally scheduled for March, was delayed to establish an appropriate funding formula.
Machogu instructed KUCCPS to open its portal to allow all KCSE candidates to start applying for their desired courses in universities and TVET institutions.
He expressed satisfaction with the new model, as the placement service had verified and published all program fees details on their website.
A total of 39 public universities, 33 private universities, three secondary Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs), and 205 public TVETs have applied to KUCCPS to accommodate the students.
Machogu directed KUCCPS officials to collaborate with the Huduma Kenya Secretariat, which has 52 centers across the country, to guide students in making their course choices.
The CS expects the Placement agency to conduct a comprehensive communication and awareness campaign to ensure that all students have a clear understanding of the application process. The placement exercise is set to be completed by August 2023.
Additionally, approximately 45,000 students classified as vulnerable will have their entire course fees covered by the government.
