Machogu Warns School Principals Against Fee and Uniform Hikes
Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary for Education, has warned school principals not to raise fees for students entering Form One in 2024.
Machogu declared at Lenana School during the release of the 2024 Form One placement results that the Ministry would not accept any unapproved fee hikes, particularly considering the financial difficulties parents are currently facing.
He made it plain that principals who engage in such methods will face actions unless they received specific consent from his office.

Machogu urged Regional and County Directors of Education to ensure that school principals do not impose any additional fees. He emphasized that their primary responsibility is to prevent principals from charging extra fees.
“Your main responsibility as county and regional directors of education is to ensure that no principal levies any additional fee,” he went on to say.
Additionally, Machogu issued a directive prohibiting schools from mandating parents to purchase uniforms from specific stores.
He argued that parents have the right to buy uniforms from any source, discouraging principals from engaging in the sale of uniforms.
Machogu insistsed that parents must be at liberty to purchase uniforms from any source, as people have been capitalizing on this business opportunity.

The responsibility of school principals he says, does not extend to the buying and selling of uniforms to parents, as engaging in such transactions would pose a conflict of interest.
This statement follows the CS’s release of the 2024 Form One placements for over one million Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam participants this year.
According to the Education CS, the Lenana School placements were carried out based on candidates’ preferences and other important criteria.
