Machogu Urges Teachers to Focus on Grade Three Literacy and Numeracy

Mr. Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, has urged teachers to ensure that students have mastered literacy and numeracy by the end of third grade.

According to the CS, foundational learning is the most important stage of education, as it is challenging for children to master literacy and numeracy skills after entering the fourth grade.

Monday, the officials of the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPHA), headed by its chairman, Mr. Johnson Nzioka, paid Mr. Machogu a courtesy call in his office.

Dr. Belio Kipsang, the principal secretary for basic education, was also present at the event.

Mr. Machogu stated that, as stakeholders in education, teachers play a crucial role in the government’s reforming education initiatives.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the management of the competency-based curriculum (CBC) would be impossible without teachers. He highlighted that the success of CBC would be greatly dependent on the teacher’s role.

Teachers, he stated, are able to instill confidence in the CBC system.

The CS insisted that it was crucial for the government to place instructors in northeastern classrooms.

Mr. Machogu noted that failing to address the situation might result in the radicalization of children in the area.

He stated that the government’s decision to eliminate the cluster requirement would ensure a stable supply of teachers for schools nationwide, including the North Eastern Region and the North Rift.

He added that the reduction of subjects was intended to lighten the course burden and was within the scope of the Ministry’s parliamentaryly granted authority.

Dr. Kipsang requested that the association consider whether students should have a two-month school break, as has been the case since 2016.

In his response, Mr. Nzioka stated that CBC is an excellent program.

He added that he was pleased with the recommendation from parents to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform (PWPER) to reduce the number of subjects in order to alleviate the curriculum burden on students.
