Machogu to Introduce Tree Planting & Ranking in School Principals’ Performance Contracts

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has announced a new initiative that will incorporate tree planting and cultivation into the performance contracts of school principals across the country.

This decision comes as a response to the urgent need to address the adverse effects of climate change.

Machogu made the announcement during a visit to Kametho Primary and Junior Secondary School in Rarieda, Siaya County on Tuesday.

According to Machogu, all primary and secondary schools in the country will be required to include tree nurseries, planting, and tree growth as part of their performance contracting.

By integrating this aspect into their contracts, the government aims to encourage principals to actively participate in tree planting initiatives and promote environmental sustainability within their school communities.

Competitive Ranking System

Machogu further emphasized the importance of competition in this initiative.

Schools that excel in tree planting will be ranked, similar to the academic performance rankings used in the past.

This ranking system will create a sense of competition among schools, motivating them to prioritize tree planting and compete for the top positions.

By incentivizing schools to engage in this environmental practice, the government hopes to significantly increase the number of trees being planted across the country.

To ensure the success of this initiative, Machogu highlighted the significance of utilizing available resources such as land and human capital.

Schools will be encouraged to make use of their available land to establish and maintain tree nurseries.

Additionally, teachers and students will receive education and training on the importance of tree planting and its role in mitigating climate change.

By equipping children with the knowledge and skills to plant trees, the government aims to instill a sense of environmental responsibility from a young age.

Machogu emphasized that one of the key objectives of this initiative is to educate children about the significance of tree planting.

By involving schools in tree planting activities, the government hopes to raise awareness among students about the importance of preserving the environment and creating a sustainable future.
