Machogu Outlines Plan to Harness ICT for Education Advancement

Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, stated that the government intends to maximize the use of emergent information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve students’ access to and quality of education.

Mr. Machogu stated that the government intends to use ICT to improve the delivery of education services to citizens.

The secretary of state stated that e-learning had the potential to enhance effective learning at all levels of education, in addition to allowing the government to use information about education to maximize its investments in education.

“The government should develop the capacity of educators and students to use ICT to implement the curriculum,” he added.

Machogu made these remarks when he met Enrique Lores, the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hewlett-Packard (HP) Company, who paid him a visit at his office yesterday.

He applauded HP’s and the government’s collaboration to optimize the education solutions it offers.

Mr. Lores responded that his company was able to provide technological solutions for education.

The Principal Secretary of the State Department for Basic Education, Belio Kipsang, was also present and revealed that the government had leveraged ICT to devise a system for disbursing capitation to schools as part of the Free Primary and Free Day Secondary Education Program.

Dr. Kipsang noted that technology would also assist in addressing the issue of learners’ access to instructors in northern Kenya, where teacher shortages have impeded learning.

The PS stated, “The Ministry could utilize virtual learning in which a teacher could remotely instruct multiple schools.”

He reaffirmed that the government intends to utilize technology to implement e-assessment, in which an assessment is created, written, delivered, and scored with the aid of technology in order to facilitate the assessment of students at the basic education level.
