Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has issued a directive to the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to open the university application portal.

In an announcement made on Wednesday, May 17, Machogu stated that all students who took the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams would be eligible to apply for various courses.

According to the directive, students who achieved a grade of C+ and above would be eligible for degree programs, while those with lower scores could apply for courses offered in colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

A new funding model, previously announced by President William Ruto, would be implemented for the 869,783 students who took the 2022 KCSE exams.

KUCCPS would publish fee structures for all programs, providing guidance to students in their course and institution selection based on income levels and the chosen program.

Students would benefit from two tiers of government funding. Upon selection, they could apply for government scholarships from the University Fund.

Additionally, placed students would have the opportunity to apply for loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

The allocation of loans would be determined through a reliable system that determines the amount to be awarded.

To facilitate the application process, Machogu instructed KUCCPS to open the application portal immediately.

He expressed satisfaction with the placement service’s compliance with the conditions for the new funding model.

KUCCPS had already verified and published fee details for their programs, which would be accessible to all students starting May 17.

While students who achieved a C+ were eligible for degree programs, Machogu emphasized that they were free to choose diploma courses offered in TVET institutions if they wished to do so.

To facilitate the application process, KUCCPS would collaborate with Huduma Centres across the country.
