Machogu Launches New Training Model for TVETs
To address unemployment and skills deficits, the government has launched a dual training system for TVET institutions.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu stated that the introduction of the new training model is part of a comprehensive curriculum reforms initiative being implemented in the TVET sector by means of the competency-based education and training (CBET) curricula, which emphasizes practice and industrial exposure.
In the new training system, according to Machogu, students will learn in both technical training centers and the industries to which they are attached.
Machogu said, the ongoing curriculum reforms will eventually expose graduates to the practical skills necessary for the job market, as opposed to theory-based education.
The adoption of the new training Approach in Technical, Vocational Education and Training colleges, according to Machogu, will prepare graduates for the modern workplace.
In a speech read on his behalf by TVET Principal Secretary Dr. Esther Muoria at the inauguration of the Kisumu National polytechnic 2023-2027 strategic plan yesterday, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the system will equip young people with hands-on experience in their respective fields of expertise.
“Through the help of our partner industries and institutions the trainees have the opportunity to be exposed to actual work conditions and get guidance from the already qualified staff thus increasing chances of their employability,” he said.
He announced that the government has partnered with Juakali associations to provide expertise, labor, and skills for the affordable housing project, the recognition of prior learning, entrepreneurship training, and the development of incubation centers throughout the country.
Further, Machogu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the skills of TVET trainers in order to guarantee quality training.
