Machogu Announces Freeze on New Projects in Public Universities

The Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has recently declared a moratorium on new projects in public universities until ongoing projects are completed.

Simultaneously, he has announced that from this year, all eligible students will be placed in public universities, and parents who opt to take their children to private universities will not receive any financial aid from the government.

He made the statement while responding to queries from the National Assembly Public Investment Committee regarding funding for universities.

The CS’s decision to halt new projects in public universities comes in light of the numerous incomplete projects that have stalled over the years, leading to unnecessary expenses and prolonged construction periods.

The moratorium aims to ensure that the ongoing projects are prioritized and completed to the highest standards before new ones are initiated.

“In such a case, no government funds will be channeled to private universities, for students who forego their slots in public universities," CS Machogu said.

CS Machogu’s announcement has generated mixed reactions from various stakeholders in the education sector. Some have welcomed the decision, citing the need to focus on completing ongoing projects before initiating new ones.

Others have expressed concerns that the move may lead to a shortage of learning facilities, particularly in rural areas, where private universities are scarce.

The CS also clarified that the decision to enroll all qualified students in public universities was not meant to discredit private universities.
