Machogu Allows Unregistered Students to Sit KCPE Exams
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has issued a directive to ministry officials and all schools, requiring them to permit all students, even those who weren’t officially registered, to take the Kenya Certificate of Primary School (KCPE) exams.
This year’s KCPE marks the culmination of the 8-4-4 system as the ministry phases it out, making this the final opportunity for the current class to participate in these exams.
Consequently, the new educational system, which has introduced significant curriculum changes, will force students who might have otherwise skipped the exam to make the transition.

Machogu emphasized that since this is the last KCPE, no learners should be unfairly excluded due to non-registration. He urged all affected students to report to their respective schools or designated examination centers to sit for the exam on the specified dates.
The issue of non-registration of candidates has been a recurring problem, with some schools failing to adhere to the scheduled registration deadlines. There have also been instances where schools neglected to register students despite having paid the exam fees and meeting all the necessary requirements.
In response to these issues, Machogu has directed his ministry to take action against officials and teachers who intentionally hindered the registration of certain students, fully aware that this would be the final KCPE.

Machogu stated, “This is a serious offense that unfairly disadvantages students, and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible in accordance with the law.”
The KCPE exams are scheduled to commence on Monday and conclude on Wednesday. This year’s exams hold historical significance as they mark the end of a tradition that began in 1985 with the introduction of Kenya’s previous educational system.
The new competency-based curriculum, commonly known as CBC, places less emphasis on exams and provides early career pathways for students.
