The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, has given a directive to all secondary schools to allow form one students to report in their primary school uniforms.

He spoke at St. Georges Girls’ High School in Nairobi on Monday, February 6th and warned school principals against forcing parents to buy new uniforms during the admission process.

He instructed school heads to make arrangements with caregivers to purchase the uniforms throughout the term instead of sending students home.

This directive comes as a result of parents’ concerns over the high cost of uniforms, especially those that must be bought from specific shops.

The Cabinet Secretary also clarified that the government has not increased school fees for the new academic year.

He stated that the amount of fees has been capped at Ksh53,455 for national and extra-county schools and Ksh45,000 for county secondary schools by the Kilemi Mwiria task force six years ago.

“The government has not increased school fees, the fees is as it was set seven years ago by the Kilemi Mwiria taskforce. Which set the amount for National schools and Extra-county schools at Ksh.53,455. The amount for County boarding secondary schools is Ksh.45, 000,” the CS said.

The CS emphasized that these fees should not be paid in one go, but should be split into three terms.

The government has already released a capitation of Ksh22,244 per student for secondary schools and has disbursed Ksh4 billion to primary schools.

The Education Secretary warned school heads against demanding any extra funds from parents and promised stern action against those who do so.

He indicated that the Ministry was yet to disburse money for the junior secondary schools as it was still waiting for the final enrollment numbers.
