Little-known Karumo TTI Named Best Performing Tertiary Institution in Kenya
Karumo Technical Training Institute, a lesser-known institution located in the semi-arid Tigania West sub-county, has been named the best performing tertiary institution in the country for the 2021/2022 financial year.
The award was presented during the release of the report on Evaluation of the Performance of Ministries, State Corporations and Tertiary Institutions, presided over by President William Ruto at the Kenya International Convention Center (KICC).
This achievement is particularly significant as the institute recently held its inaugural graduation ceremony just two months ago.
Ms. Florah Kanyua, the institution’s Principal, attributed the remarkable performance to teamwork and dedication among the staff members. She explained that the institution had set targets at the beginning of the financial year as part of their performance contracting, and had achieved almost all of them.
For instance, they exceeded their target for academic performance, scoring 73% compared to the set target of 67%. They also successfully constructed new classrooms and provided internship opportunities to young people, among other targets. The institution’s overall performance was rated at a mean score of 78%.
Ms. Kanyua emphasized the importance of teamwork and individual target-setting among the trainers, which contributed to the institution’s success. She also highlighted the advantages of the institution’s location in a rural area, which provides a conducive environment for learning with fewer distractions compared to urban areas.
She mentioned that a secure environment and disciplined students were factors that contributed to their win.
However, the institution also faces challenges, including a lack of adequate learning facilities, infrastructure, and water supply. As a day school, it lacks hostels for students who come from far-flung areas, resulting in high rental fees for off-campus housing.
Ms. Kanyua appealed to the residents to construct more houses to accommodate the growing student population. She also pointed out that the institution has a large wage bill due to the employment of trainers under the board of governors, and suggested that if these trainers were absorbed by the government, the funds could be directed towards other development projects.
Karumo Technical Training Institute’s recognition as the best performing tertiary institution in Kenya for the 2021/2022 financial year is attributed to teamwork, dedication, and strong performance contracting.
Despite facing challenges, such as inadequate facilities and infrastructure, the institution’s rural location, disciplined students, and participation in co-curricular activities have contributed to its success.
Ms. Kanyua encouraged parents to consider sending their children to institutions like Karumo Technical Training Institute, regardless of their secondary school grades, as they have the potential to be molded into important individuals in the future.
