Lecturers Stage Protest Over Delayed Salaries

In the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), lecturers from the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) went on strike on Wednesday due to delayed salary payments. A video seen by Teachers Updates captured the lecturers marching around the university premises, expressing their anger and demanding the immediate release of their salaries.

While voicing their concerns, the instructors insisted on the prompt payment of their September salaries, as October was rapidly approaching. One of the protesting lecturers questioned the whereabouts of the funds provided by the government for their September salaries.

They accused the university management of allegedly diverting the money to settle the institution’s debts. According to one staff member, the government had already allocated funds (capitation) for the month of September to all universities, including TUK.

The staff member stated, “Don’t be misled into thinking that the government hasn’t released the capitation. I know that last month, the government disbursed double capitation to all public universities.

“Now, we’re waiting for the October capitation, and if we’re not careful, we may face this situation indefinitely.”

Initially, the lecturers had threatened to withhold students’ results due to the payment delays, but they have now opted to stage demonstrations to express their grievances.

These protests occur just two months before a graduation ceremony for both degree and diploma students. TUK had already informed all graduates about the requirements for the ceremony scheduled for December 19.
