Kwanthanze Girls Win Africa Schools Volleyball Championship
Kwanthanze Secondary School made history on Tuesday by winning the African volleyball girls championship in their debut appearance at the Federation of African Schools Sport Championships held in Casablanca, Morocco.
The six-time East Africa champions defeated Lycee Bir Anzarane Team A from Morocco in a one-sided final that saw Kwanthanze win in straight sets of 25-17, 25-16, and 25-10.
The victory extended Kwanthanze’s dominance in volleyball to the continent, and they secured a place at the World School Games whose venue and dates are yet to be decided.
To reach the final, Kwanthanze had earlier defeated Lycee Bir Anzarane Team B in their opening match of the competition on Monday.
They topped Group B after this victory and advanced directly to the final. Meanwhile, Morocco Team A had beaten Niger and Senegal to reach the final.
The governor of Machakos County, Wavinya Ndeti, who had sponsored the team’s air tickets, congratulated the girls on their victory.
Ndeti said that she was delighted to learn of Kwanthanze Secondary School’s success and that the team had once again raised the Kenyan flag high in Morocco. She pledged to continue supporting the team, which she described as the pride of Machakos.
Kwanthanze’s head coach, Justin Kigwari, attributed their win to the team’s dedication and sense of duty.
He said that Kwanthanze had wanted to participate in the Africa inter-school championship for a long time because they felt they needed more challenges after dominating the East Africa scene for years.
He added that their focus would now shift to defending all their titles, from the zonals to the East Africa championships.
In contrast to the girls’ success, Kwanthanze’s boys’ team, the reigning East Africa volleyball champions, faltered in their opening match of the competition, losing 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 19-25) to Lycee Morocco.
The boys’ final was scheduled for Wednesday, which was the last day of the two-day inter-school championship.
Kwanthanze’s victory in the girls’ competition was a remarkable achievement for the school and the Kenyan volleyball community.
It was also a significant milestone for African schools’ sports, as it demonstrated the growing strength and competitiveness of African school teams.
The success of Kwanthanze and other African schools in various sports competitions in recent years has shown that African schools are capable of competing with the best schools from other continents.
Kwanthanze Secondary School’s success in volleyball can be attributed to several factors, including a well-structured and comprehensive sports program, a culture of discipline and hard work, and the support of the school administration and the local community.
The school has a long history of excellence in sports, and volleyball is one of the most popular sports at the school.
The school has invested heavily in its sports program, providing modern sports facilities and equipment, hiring qualified coaches, and organizing regular sports competitions at the school and regional levels.
The success of Kwanthanze’s volleyball program has also been boosted by the school’s recruitment policy, which targets talented young players from across the country.
The school has a reputation for nurturing and developing young talent, and many of its volleyball players have gone on to represent Kenya at the national level.
The school has also established partnerships with local volleyball clubs and federations to provide its players with additional training and exposure to higher levels of competition.
Another factor that has contributed to Kwanthanze’s success in volleyball is the strong team spirit and camaraderie among the players. The team is made up of players from different backgrounds and regions of the country, but they have bonded well and worked together.
