KUPPET Threatens to Recall Teachers From Insecure North Rift Areas Over Bandit Attacks.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has expressed growing concern over the increasing incidents of banditry in Baringo and other North Rift counties.
The union highlighted that these attacks are severely impacting teachers’ morale and performance due to the fear and insecurity they generate.
According to KUPPET Executive Secretary Sammy Chelanga, the deteriorating security situation has left educators vulnerable, especially those serving in remote and high-risk regions.
He condemned the targeting and killing of teachers, stating that it was unacceptable for unarmed public servants to be exposed to such dangers while simply carrying out their duties.
Chelanga emphasized the urgent need for government intervention, warning that KUPPET would consider withdrawing teachers from affected areas if their safety cannot be assured.
He insisted that the protection of teachers should be treated as a top priority by the authorities. He proposed that teachers be granted firearms or offered 24-hour security like other government officers such as chiefs.

The KUPPET official also advocated for the inclusion of community elders in peace-building initiatives. He argued that elders are more likely to act in the region’s best interest, unlike politicians who often have conflicting agendas that hinder long-term peace efforts.
Chelanga’s remarks came at a time when the region is experiencing renewed cases of banditry, sparking criticism of the government for its perceived inaction. He insisted that unless meaningful steps are taken to restore safety, the union will not stand by while teachers continue to face threats in their workplaces.
