KUPPET Raises Concern Over Low Pay for ECD Teachers Below Minimum Wage.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has expressed concern over the low pay for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers across the country, saying their current pay is below the minimum wage.

Speaking during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebrations, KUPPET National Chairman Jeremiah Omboko Milemba said despite being the foundation builders of learners, many ECDE teachers are in financial hardship and poor working conditions.

Milemba asked national and county governments to review ECDE teachers’ remuneration structures urgently to comply with the Constitution and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) guidelines.

He said KUPPET together with other education stakeholders will continue to advocate for fair and equitable pay for all teachers including those in early learning institutions.

“They are being paid below the minimum wage,” Milemba said, asking union leaders and education authorities to address the issue through policy dialogue and structured engagement.

KUPPET reiterated that all teachers regardless of level or category deserve decent pay and better working conditions as part of the overall effort to strengthen the education sector and uphold professional standards.
