KUPPET Opposes Education Ministry’s Attempt to Alter TSC’s Role
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has stood firm on the independence of TSC amidst education recommendation proposals.
Concerning the Ministry of Education’s desire to assume some of the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) responsibilities, KUPPET states that it would not tolerate anything less than the truly independent commission that the unions had fought for.

Edward Obwocha, KUPPET National Secretary for Secondary Education, emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence of the TSC, which they fought for.
He expressed the desire for the TSC to be a supportive and beneficial institution for teachers, rather than causing them distress.
“We want the independence of the TSC because we fought for it. If it is going to change, let it not be a suffering centre for teachers but a smiling centre,” said Edward Obwocha, KUPPET National Secretary for Secondary Education.
According to TSC, the Commission’s Board had assessed the report’s recommendations and identified elements that would influence its constitutional mandate and functions.

CEO Nancy Macharia emphasized that the report had not only omitted the Commission from the list of visited institutions but also from the list of organizations that had submitted memoranda to the party.
Concerning the proposal to allow the ministry to control operations in learning institutions and TSC to decentralize its functions, the commission states that the dissolution of the directorate will result in TSC losing key functions such as Teacher Registration and Maintenance of the Teacher register, Teacher Performance, Appraisal, and Development, Teacher Professional Development, and Improving the Quality of Teaching Service.
