Kuppet Calls For Sh100 Increased Exam Marking Rate
Teachers in secondary schools now want the Kenya National Examinations Council to enhance exam marking rates.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers secretary general Akelo Misori stated the teachers had been marking examinations under stress.
The union now wants Knec to increase the per-script rate from Sh55 to Sh100.
Misori stated that the challenges identified are shared by teachers at other marking centres.
“The teachers have said enough is enough, we will develop unspecified actions in future,” Misori said.
He stated the union will soon call for a total boycott of marking KCSE if their demands are not satisfied.
“You cannot wake people at 4 am, they are not prisoners or slaves,” he said.He criticized the substandard living conditions in the marking centers.
The teachers have been assigned to various schools in Nairobi.
Teachers who were grading CRE paper 1 on Tuesday disrupted the marking process at Mangu High after protesting delayed pay and bad working conditions.
Teachers were marking CRE examination papers when the situation deteriorated.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogo and elementary education PS Belio Kipsang has arrived at the school to calm a situation involving CRE P1 Examiners that apparently began last night.
The CS’s attempts to calm down the teachers were unsuccessful since he was yelled down.
Teachers escorted TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, who had also arrived at the marking centre, out of the school.
Teachers are marking improved working conditions prior to resuming grading.
They had previously requested that the current Chief Examiner be replaced, and Macharia complied by appointing an interim replacement while negotiations continued.
The marking of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination commenced on January 2 at several marking centers throughout the nation.
The marking should conclude a few days prior to the January 23 announcement of the results.
