KUPPET Calls for Immediate Payment of JSS Teachers After Retooling Exercise

The Executive Secretary of the Homa Bay branch of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) wants JSS teachers paid immediately after the retooling exercise.

Mr Stephen Yogo stated that the union is in complete support of capacity building, adding that it enables teachers to perform their jobs to the best of their abilities.

“However, I urge the body financing the exercise to pay the teachers instantly at the end of the retooling exercise; they do not have to wait for long,” said Mr. Yogo.

56,000 junior secondary school (JSS) teachers will be retrained for the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency Based Assessment (CBA).

However, the retraining will only apply to newly-hired junior secondary school teachers, not those previously employed in primary schools.

The Commission listed teachers of language, science, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects for training in a memorandum dated 26 September and addressed to TSC Regional and County Directors.

The grade 7 teacher training begun on 9th and will conclude on 13th of October 2023. However, Master Trainer and Trainer of Trainers (TOT) training began earlier.

The Executive Secretary added that the union intends to plant trees in schools in an effort to conserve the environment.

He noted that they will select schools in Homa Bay to plant and nurture trees within their territories, naming them KUPPET Forests.

The training of the teachers follows the placement of 18,000 intern teachers in junior secondary schools by TSC at the end of August and beginning of September.

Furthermore, the training coincides with the upcoming national writing assessment for seventh-grade students scheduled for October.

The assessments are now available for schools to download, print, and administer to students.
