Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has effectively taken over teacher placement in diploma colleges.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha announced that 1,538 students have been assigned to Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education programs.

The move comes after the Ministry of Education recently expanded the KUCCPS mandate by transferring admission of new TTC students to the placement agency.

This means that students at the institutions will now be eligible for Higher Education Loans Board loans (HELB).

TTC admissions were previously handled at the county headquarters by the ministry, with applicants manually filling out and submitting application forms, but will now be handled online through KUCCPS systems.

According to Magoha, the students have been assigned to three TTCs. He mentioned that the majority of female students will be taking Primary Teacher courses to work with CBC students.

Mercy Wahome, Chief Executive Officer of KUCCPS, stated that KUCCPS will add value to the TTC admissions process by using its automated placement system to ensure fair competition among applicants.

“One thing we pride ourselves in, is being able to place students in the fairest way possible. We can assure the Ministry that (KUCCPS) is ready for the task,” Dr Wahome said.

She mentioned that the placement agency had created a foolproof automated admissions system that ensures all qualified applicants are placed.

She also outlined the admissions process for the second batch of students who will join the institution to pursue training through the Competency-Based Curriculum.

This year, KUCCPS has 35 teacher training colleges listed on their portal for placement.

Prior to the integration of TTC admissions into KUCCPS, the placement agency coordinated the selection of students for government sponsorship to public and private universities, TVET colleges, and the three secondary diploma teacher training colleges, namely Kibabii, Kagumo, and Lugari.

KUCCPS filled 100% of the capacity at the three secondary diploma TTCs in the 2021 placement.

The primary diploma TTCs attracted 990 trainees out of the 10,000 targeted by the ministry’s recruitment.
