The primary suspect in the murder case of June Jerop, a student at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya, made startling claims in the High Court on Tuesday, April 11.

Initially believed to be Jerop’s boyfriend and accused of inviting her for a coffee date on March 18, the suspect denied ever meeting her and instead stated that Jerop owed him Ksh1 million for a car she had purchased from him.

The suspect further refuted the alleged romantic relationship between him and the deceased, asserting that they were only business partners.

“At the time of her passing, she still owed me Ksh 1 million which she was still paying. As such the motor vehicle was still in my name.

According to the suspect’s affidavit, Jerop had bought a car from him but had not paid the full amount, leaving a debt of Ksh1 million.

He claimed that Jerop had asked him to put the car lease in his name in order to avoid scrutiny from the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), where she worked as an accountant.

The suspect alleged that Jerop did not want her friends and colleagues to know about her car purchase and would use his company, located in Bungoma County, to apply for tenders at NITA.

In an effort to prove his innocence, the suspect stated that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Inspector General of Police had verified his claims. He maintained that at the time of Jerop’s death, she still owed him Ksh1 million, and therefore the motor vehicle was still registered in his name.

He explained that Jerop had asked him to have the lease put in his name so that she could avoid interrogation at work due to her relatively low salary of Ksh48,000 and high rent of Ksh30,000.

Furthermore, the suspect accused Jerop’s sister of interfering with his personal possessions, including taking a Wi-Fi router, when the police searched his house.

He claimed that Jerop’s sister, who is not a police officer, had interrogated him about the deceased and had taken video footage of his entire house in the presence of the officers who did not stop her.

The suspect’s lawyer argued that his client had only learned of Jerop’s death when the police came looking for him. He maintained that prior to her death, Jerop had tried to contact the suspect twice, but he did not answer.

The lawyer further emphasized that no evidence had been presented by the officers to implicate the suspect, including CCTV footage that did not show him with the deceased at her residence.

Jerop had gone missing on March 19, only to be found dead by the roadside in Nairobi a few days later. The case is currently ongoing in court, and the suspect’s claims have added a new dimension to the investigation.

The suspect’s allegations have raised questions about the nature of his relationship with Jerop and the circumstances surrounding her death. If his claims are verified, it could potentially change the direction of the murder investigation and shed new light on the motive behind the crime.

The court will need to carefully consider the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defense to arrive at a just verdict.

The ongoing court case will likely continue to reveal more details about the relationship between the suspect and the deceased, and the motive behind the murder.
