KNUT Wants Ministry to Fast-Track Transfer of Delocalized Teachers

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) wants the Ministry of Education to fast-track the transfer of teachers who were affected by the delocalization program back to their home counties.

Oyuu stated that the delocalized teachers have been suffering for a long time and were supposed to be back in their home counties by the end of January, but this has not happened.

On Monday last week, over 200 primary school teachers from West Pokot, who are currently working in Trans Nzoia County, marched to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) offices in Kitale to demand transfers.

The teachers were protesting that TSC had denied their transfers to their home counties despite the government abolishing the delocalisation programme.

Delocalization of teachers refers to the practice of transferring teachers from their original posting to another location, often far from their homes.

This policy has been criticized in Kenya for several reasons including:

Negative impact on family life. Delocalization often requires teachers to leave their families behind, leading to strain on personal relationships and increased stress levels.

Reduced job satisfaction: Teachers who are transferred to unfamiliar locations may feel isolated and disconnected, leading to decreased job satisfaction and reduced motivation to perform well.

Decreased teacher retention: Teachers who are delocalized may be more likely to leave the profession, either because of the difficulties of being away from their families or because of the stress of working in unfamiliar environments.

For these reasons, many argue that the delocalization of teachers in Kenya should be ended or at least limited to only those cases where it is truly necessary.
