Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) delegates from across the nation are in Kisumu for the 62nd annual conference of the union.

The teachers’ union consists of 110 branches spread throughout eight regions.

The National Executive Council, chaired by national chairman Patrick Munuhe, stated that they will use this year’s conference to advocate for a raise in pay.

“We must struggle to create a gold ring of commitment, service and dedication, and create a web of unbreakable sense of unity that will bring home victories,” Munuhe said.

Collins Oyuu, the secretary general of Knut, stated that the organization currently has a good working relationship with its employer, the Teachers Service Commission.

Among the important themes being discussed at the conference held at Citam Church Hall Kisumu is the 2022-25 CBA, advancement of teachers, deployment policy, the Teacher Professional Development, among others.

Oyuu reported that they have written to TSC to revise their CBA, which they had already submitted, in light of the current economic climate.

He claimed they are now pressing for a 60 per cent wage rise on top of other non-monetary components that were in the memorandum they gave to their employer.

“For the past five years, teachers were not compensated, it cumulatively rounded to 60 per cent. We have therefore proposed a 60 per cent increment for teachers within the running CBA to cushion them against inflation,” Oyuu said.

He stated that they had requested the TSC to review the promotion policy after it shifted from higher education requirements to an evaluation mode.

He stated the move has affected instructors who went back to class and got higher education certificates.

Oyuu stated, “The NEC is urging the employer to reconsider this policy so that teachers who get higher education credentials and those who excel in general under the new curriculum can profit.”

Knut has also applauded the hiring of 30,000 teachers in January 2019 to fill a shortage of 116,000 educators.

As the implementation of CBC takes root, Oyuu encouraged TSC to find ways of paying teachers’ training, which he stated is Sh6,000 each module.
