KNUT Calls for Extensive Public Participation in Housing Levy Proposal

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has recently emphasized the importance of comprehensive public participation in the housing levy proposal.

In a press conference held on Friday, Knut Secretary General Collins Oyuu highlighted the need for clarity regarding the details of the levy.

The union intends to fully understand the implications of the proposal before taking a definitive stance.

Oyuu expressed concern over opposing the levy without a clear understanding of its contents, stressing the importance of engaging in a meaningful dialogue to obtain accurate information.

By actively involving the public, the union aims to provide its members with comprehensive knowledge about the housing levy and empower them to make informed choices.

Oyuu underscored the need for a transparent and inclusive approach, urging the authorities to share detailed information regarding the levy’s objectives, mechanisms, and potential impact on teachers.

“We must sit and listen. We must be indicted properly on what will come from this levy,” he said.

The limited access to information has left many teachers in a state of uncertainty, fueling concerns about the potential consequences of the levy.

Salary Increase and Existing Loans:

Knut officials from Trans-Nzoia, led by Secretary George Wanjala, have also called for a salary increase from the government before the implementation of the housing levy.

They pointed out that teachers have not received any salary increment in the past five years while still having loans to repay.

Wanjala emphasized that teachers do not rely on the government to save money for them, as they are already saving through cooperative societies.
