KNQA Urges 2023 KCSE Students to Join TVET Irrespective Of Grades

The acting Director General of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), Dr. Alice Kande, has urged learners to pursue tertiary education regardless of their performance in the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results.

Dr. Kande emphasized that students can initiate their educational journey with an artisan certificate, catering to those who scored the lowest grade, and subsequently progress to higher levels, including university.

Reportedly, the government has facilitated the entry of candidates with an ‘E’ grade into universities through the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) pathway, bypassing the traditional requirement of a minimum university entry grade of C+.

Dr. Kande highlighted the Kenya National Qualification Framework’s role in providing a comprehensive structure for qualifications, promoting lifelong learning and a diverse education system.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, during the KCSE results announcement, instructed the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) to initiate the placement of students in TVET institutions ahead of the March 2024 admissions.

Key Findings from KCSE 2023 Results:

  • Candidates with the minimum university entry qualification (Grade C+ and above) constituted 22.27% of the total, numbering 201,133.
  • Those who achieved a pass grade (grade D+ and above) accounted for 58.27%, totaling 526,222 candidates.
  • A total of 48,174 candidates obtained a mean grade of E in the examination.

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority, established under the KNQF Act Number 22 of 2014, operates with a mandate to coordinate and harmonize education, training, assessment, and quality assurance for all qualifications awarded in the country. The KNQF framework aims to enhance quality, ensure international comparability, and promote lifelong learning.

The initiatives are seen as vital steps towards shaping the future of learners and fostering overall national development and prosperity.

CS Machogu reiterated the government’s commitment to providing quality education to all Kenyan children, aligning with the President’s directive to ensure universal access, retention, transition, and progression through completion of Basic Education, as mandated by the Constitution.
