The Qualifications Agency will expedite strategies and regulations that will ensure the authenticity of Kenya’s educational credentials.

Alice Kande, the acting director general of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), stated that the organization will strive for the implementation of blocked initiatives.

“We will ensure that we register more qualification awarding institutions, and rollout Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) nationally among others,” said Dr Kande.

Dr. Kande was reacting to a request from Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to adopt the National Qualifications Framework in its entirety.

During the release of last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination results, Mr. Machogu stated that the government is committed to ensuring that the quality of degrees and certificates issued by all institutions remains high.

KNQA is tasked by the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) Act with coordinating and supervising the development of national qualification policies and facilitating the recognition of competencies.

Dr. Kande stated yesterday that the agency has already developed the Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System policy and Credit Accumulation and Transfer System for agricultural qualifications in order to facilitate the recognition, portability, and transferability of prior units of learning or accomplishment.

“Credit transfers world over are key enablers of quality, efficiency, effectiveness and inclusivity and puts the learner at the centre of their education and training needs,” she said.

She stated that KNQA will continue to create the institutional capacity required for the implementation of RPL in conjunction with its stakeholders.

Dr. Kande stated that the authority has established a management information system to increase the efficacy of the process, and “we are continuously creating and sensitizing stakeholders about this great initiative through a campaign dubbed KNQA RPL Mashinani.”
