The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) is set to introduce questionnaires for Grade 9 learners to explore their interests and guide them in selecting pathways as they transition into Senior Secondary School (SSS).

This initiative complements the existing achievement assessments conducted at this level.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere announced that in addition to the academic assessments, students would undertake questionnaires designed to align their personal attributes and preferences with the pathways and tracks they will pursue in SSS.

This approach aims to ensure students make informed decisions about their future rather than following paths imposed upon them.

During a stakeholders’ engagement on implementing Competency-Based Education (CBE), Njengere emphasized the importance of trusting teachers’ ability to handle the School-Based Assessments (SBAs), as they have been doing so since 2019.

He highlighted that results from these assessments consistently show a standard distribution curve, underscoring teachers’ professionalism and objectivity.

Training Teachers for New Assessment Methods

As the country prepares for the Grade 9 evaluations next year, KNEC has organized a seminar for teachers selected from 235 schools involved in the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) pilot program last year.

The seminar aims to familiarize educators with the new national assessment framework and gather feedback from teachers, school heads, and students.

A key component of this feedback process is the learner questionnaire, which assesses students’ academic preferences and personality traits.

KNEC Director of Research and Innovation Anne Ngatia reiterated that this assessment is vital for identifying learners’ potential and guiding them toward paths aligned with their interests and skills.

Aligning Education with Career Aspirations

The KJSEA program plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ future career choices. It reflects the broader objective of aligning the education system with learners’ strengths, skills, and aspirations.

Upon completing Junior Secondary School (Grade 9), students will transition to Senior Secondary School, where they will select a career pathway tailored to their abilities and goals.

By integrating questionnaires into Grade 9 assessments, KNEC aims to foster a more personalized and effective approach to education, ensuring students are well-equipped to succeed in their chosen pathways.
