How to Access KNEC Sample Materials, Rubrics and Optical Mark Reader (OMR) Answer Sheets for KPSEA and KJSEA.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued a circular (Ref: KNEC/GEN/EA/EM/KPSEA/KJSEA/CIR/2025/001) to all Heads of Institutions presenting candidates for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) on how to access updated sample materials, rubrics and Optical Mark Reader (OMR) answer sheets.
KNEC has uploaded the KJSEA sample papers to the Council’s website on 20 January 2025. These sample papers developed by KNEC and available for free are in the same format as the actual KJSEA to be held in October 2025.
The purpose of releasing the samples is to allow junior schools to familiarize candidates with the structure and instructions of the assessment papers.
KNEC has also reviewed the design of OMR answer sheets for both KPSEA and KJSEA in 2025 cycle.
Unlike in previous years where candidates were required to draw lines, the new OMR sheets require candidates to shade their answers.
Sample rubrics and OMR sheets have also been uploaded to the KNEC website to reflect this change.
Institutions can access the KJSEA sample papers, KPSEA and KJSEA OMR answer sheets and rubrics through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) Portal by following these steps:
- Visit the CBA Portal at https://cba.knec.ac.ke.
- Log in using Assessment Centre credentials.
- To access KJSEA sample papers:
- Open the Grade 9 Portal.
- Click the “Instructions & Sample Papers” button.
- Click “Download” next to each required Learning Area sample.
- To access KJSEA Sample Cover Pages and KPSEA OMR Sheets:
- Open either the Grade 9 or Grade 6 (KPSEA) portal.
- Click the “Download Sample Cover Page and OMR” button.
- The following KJSEA Sample Cover Pages and OMR templates are available for download:
- 601 — English Language — Sample Cover Page * 602 — Kiswahili Lugha — Sample Cover Page
- 606 — Kenya Sign Language (KSL) — Sample Cover Page
Heads of Institutions are advised to expose candidates to the sample materials immediately to enable adequate preparation for the assessments. Candidates should practice shading the OMR circles extensively to ensure accurate scoring during marking.
The Council has also emphasized portal security and advised Centre Managers to log out after each session and keep login credentials confidential.
