KNEC Releases Withheld Results For 2023 KCSE Candidates; How Schools performed

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has, at last, released the results of several KCSE candidates, initially withheld due to suspected malpractice.

On Friday morning, Cardinal Otunga Boys fraternity in Kisii expressed jubilation upon receiving the results for all its 432 students who took the 2023 KCSE exams.

During the announcement of the 2023 KCSE results, the Ministry of Education, through KNEC, identified 4,113 candidates nationwide whose results were flagged due to alleged violations of exam regulations.

Tension is mounting in certain schools where candidates are still awaiting their results.

Cardinal Otunga school Principal, Albert Ombiro, reported, “I wish to inform the general public that we finally have 100% of the results, and their results are very impressive because all of them are transitioning to the university.”

The school had a total registered candidature of 432, with the last candidate scoring a B-. The Principal noted that the students achieved 6 As, 60 A-, 137 B+, and 26 B-.

Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere emphasized collective responsibility for school performance, stating, “All of us need to take responsibility if the school has not done well, it’s not just the candidate, it is all the stakeholders…so let us not get to this misadvice of chasing the principal on the basis of poor performance.”

A similar sense of relief was experienced at Nyakongo Secondary School after KNEC released the withheld results for the entire 2023 KCSE cohort of 263 students, clearing the school of alleged malpractice cases.

In Migori County, Mabera Secondary School also received their previously withheld results from the examination body.

However, tension is high in Nandi County’s Samoei Secondary School, which is still awaiting its results. MP Benard Kutur expressed displeasure with the Ministry of Education for withholding the results without prior investigations.

“There was no hurry of releasing results without being conscious of people and the suffering parents are going through…you should have done investigations before saying these results have been cancelled because now you’re holding students to ransom as others are celebrating…everybody is in limbo,” remarked the Nandi Hills lawmaker.

KNEC flagged results for a total of 4113 candidates over suspected exam malpractice. The fate of these candidates was to be determined by a special committee formed by the Ministry of Education, where principals of affected schools were to be questioned regarding their claims.
