KNEC Issues New Guidelines on Items Banned from Exam Rooms; What Candidates Must Know
In an effort to prevent cheating, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) issued on Wednesday a number of guidelines that candidates for this year’s national examinations are anticipated to follow.
As the agency gets ready to preside over the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), scheduled to commence on October 30 and October 23, respectively, it issued a statement outlining prohibited items in exam rooms.
KNEC detailed the prohibited items in examination rooms. Included in this category are wristwatches and programmable calculators.

In addition, the Council made it clear that bags, briefcases, backpacks, and kiondos are not permitted in exam rooms.
In addition, KNEC prohibits electronic items, including mobile phones, smartwatches, headphones, tablets, body cameras, camera pens, and devices with Bluetooth capabilities, from exam rooms.
KNEC has issued stringent guidelines prohibiting the use of clothing, footwear, and materials with handwritten notes by exam candidates.
In addition, the Council emphasized its vigilance in preventing candidates from having any inscriptions on their bodies, with the exception of declared tattoos, which are exempt from the list of banned materials.
The council stated, “Maintain your integrity and refrain from sharing exam-related information on social media.”

KNEC stated that it expects candidates to be sincere and uphold their integrity throughout the duration of the examinations.
Furthermore, candidates must ensure they arrive on time for their exams to enhance punctuality and minimize anxiety.
In addition, the Council advised candidates to use their cell phones at home, but not during examinations.
The Council concluded, “Trust that KNEC has diligently prepared and secured the examinations.”
