The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued a warning regarding numerous online posts falsely claiming to rank schools in the 2023 KCSE exams. KNEC emphasized that it no longer engages in ranking schools or candidates in national examinations.

In response to the misinformation, KNEC posted on social media: “Fake News alert! This is to remind the public that KNEC does not rank schools or candidates in national examinations.”

Among the fabricated posts, one attempted to provide a breakdown of the top 1,000 schools nationwide based on the results released on Monday.

Another post purported to rank schools by mean score, region, county, and mean grade, while a third represented mean scores for various subjects and the overall mean grade of a school claimed to have topped the 2023 KCSE exam.

The practice of ranking schools in national exams was discontinued in 2014, aiming to prevent cheating during examinations. Stakeholders, including former Education Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi, advocated for the abolishment, citing numerous drawbacks.

Prof Kaimenyi highlighted concerns that the ranking system led schools to prioritize performance over the quality of education, creating an unfair comparison between well-equipped institutions and those lacking resources.

Furthermore, the former CS argued that some schools, in pursuit of better rankings, subjected students to extra coaching, resulting in fatigue and a lack of interest during normal hours.

The scrapping of school ranking aimed to address such imbalances and create a fairer educational environment.

Proponents of eliminating school ranking also emphasized its negative impact on the emotional well-being of students from poorly performing schools. While boosting the morale of learners and teachers in high-performing institutions, the ranking system was perceived as demoralizing for others.

The 2023 KCSE results were officially released on Monday at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu. Out of the 899,453 candidates who sat for the exams, 201,133 achieved a mean grade of C plus and above, qualifying them for university admission.
