KNEC Exposes ‘KCSE Grade Editing’ Fraudsters Swindling Candidates and Parents
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has warned Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) candidates and their parents not to fall victim to con artists.
The examiner declared on Monday that it had learned of fraudsters using text messages to defraud students who are eagerly awaiting the results of the national exam.
The con men promise to be able to change an individual’s grade to meet their preferences for a fee of Ksh9,000.

“Hallo (sic), send 9k ya registration nikufanyie mpango upgrading ya KCSE inaendelea saa hii. NB requirements: random num’ school code, index num ya strong student and weak student. Call tuongee,” read the illogical call to action.
Loosely translated, the sender of the message requested that recipients provide him money as well as the school code and index numbers of strong and weak students.
The swindler also included their mobile money details, with explicit directions for the targeted persons to call them for more information.
KNEC dismissed the message as false, stating that no one had the authority to change a learner’s grade in the yet-to-be-released national examination results.

“Do not fall prey to fraudsters purporting to be able to adjust KCSE scores. Absolutely no one can influence the scores of any national examination,” read the statement in part.
The warning comes just days after KNEC denied reports that the KCSE results would be released before Christmas on Friday.
KNEC flagged a blog article that claimed the KCSE results would be issued between December 16 and December 22.
“KNEC has made no such statement.” “KCSE marking is ongoing, and results will be released when they are ready,” the Council clarified.
The KCSE exams began on October 10 and completed on Friday, November 24, with physics practicals, with a total of 903,260 candidates taking the exams.
