KNEC Denies Ranking Nyambaria High School as Top in 2024 KCSE Results.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has refuted claims that it ranked Nyambaria High School as the leading institution in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
The council issued a statement on Thursday afternoon addressing a viral social media post that alleged Nyambaria High School topped the recently released exam results with a mean grade of 10.87.
The disputed list circulating online claimed Cardinal Otunga was the second-best-performing school with a mean score of 10.76. It further listed Kokuro Boys and Alliance High School as third and fourth with mean scores of 10.68 and 10.52, respectively.
Other schools purportedly among the top ten included St Brigids Girls Kiminini, Strathmore School, and Pangani Girls High School in fifth, sixth, and seventh positions. Nakuru Boys High School, Asumbi High School, and Mang’u High School were also named among the top ten.
KNEC Flags Fake List
KNEC dismissed the rankings as fake and misleading, urging the public to disregard the circulating list. The council clarified that such lists are unofficial and do not represent any legitimate rankings of schools.
In 2020, KNEC formally abolished the ranking of schools and students, citing that it fostered unhealthy and unscrupulous competition among institutions.
This regulation came into effect during the release of the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and KCSE results. The goal of the move was to curb unethical practices during examinations.
The new policy also brought changes to the selection of KCPE candidates for secondary school placements. Priority was given to students from public institutions when joining national and extra-county secondary schools.

KNEC’s clarification followed Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos’ release of the 2024 KCSE results at Mtihani House in Nairobi.
Migos stated that 962,512 candidates sat for the 2024 examinations, an increase from the 899,453 candidates in 2023. He advised parents and students to access the results via the KNEC online portal at https://results.knec.ac.ke/.
This clarification aimed to address the misinformation circulating online and reinforce the council’s stance on the abolishment of school rankings.
