KNEC Convene Crisis Meeting Over KCPE 2023 Results Errors

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) announced a crisis meeting for Sunday in order to address the contentious and erroneous Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results

According to reports, the council members were notified to attend the meeting at 10:00 a.m. following a sequence of concerns expressed by parents who cast doubt on the reliability of the results.

At first, KNEC issued a statement elucidating the errors, which encompassed erroneously awarding candidates grades and attributing those grades to subjects in which they had not participated.

Additional errors encompass instances where students from a single institution obtain comparable grades in a single subject, while others receive either exceptionally high or extremely low grades in the same subject.

Numerous academic institutions have composed letters to the Council, urging the organization to investigate the extensive irregularities observed throughout the nation. Moi Kabarak Primary School in Nakuru County requested that KNEC evaluate the institution’s performance in a letter.

The statement reported that the school received the 2023 KCPE results following the communication by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education. However, the school expressed dissatisfaction with the results, stating that they do not accurately represent the merit and abilities of the majority of their learners.

In light of this dissatisfaction, the school reported that they have appealed to KNEC for a review of the results. They expressed hope that KNEC will promptly investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

Dissatisfied candidates expressed concern that the errors could impede their opportunities to gain admission to prestigious secondary institutions across the nation.

A teary candidate spoke to the media, expressing that their dream has been shattered as the marks obtained fall far below the requirements for admission to Mary Hill School.

Another student lamented experiencing overwhelming sadness and depression, highlighting that such results are unprecedented since their enrollment in the school.

Several hours after KNEC issued a statement attributing the errors to a configuration error with the SMS code, the Council scheduled the meeting. Despite the explanation, the Council assured students that the results displayed on the portal were accurate.

Additionally, KNEC instructed candidates who had concerns about the results to submit an appeal within thirty days of the date the exam results became public.
