KNEC Announces Registration Guidelines for 2024 Teacher Education Examinations

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released a circular regarding the registration of teacher trainees for the 2024 Teacher Education examinations and assessments.

This article outlines important information for Principals of Teacher Training Colleges and Sub-County Adult and Continuing Education Officers who are responsible for presenting candidates in the various teacher education examinations.

Teacher Education Examinations/Assessments for 2024: KNEC will be administering several teacher education examinations and assessments in the year 2024. These include:

  1. Upgrade Diploma in Primary Education (UDPTE)
  2. Upgrade Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (UDECTE)
  3. Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE for year 1 and 2)
  4. Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) year 1 and 2
  5. Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE) for year 1 and 2
  6. Teacher Certificate for Adult Education (TCAE)
  7. Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE)
  8. Diploma in Special Needs Education (DSNE)
  9. Diploma and Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) for repeaters in specific colleges

Important registration Dates:

Registration of teacher trainees for the 2024 examinations and assessments will take place between October 15 and November 30, 2023, using the cbate portal.

Teacher trainees who were previously referred in certain examinations or assessments are eligible to register for the subject(s) they were referred in.

KNEC will not offer the PTE Examinations in March/April 2024, as it has been phased out and replaced with Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE).

First-year Teacher Trainees who were admitted in September 2023 to pursue DECTE, DPTE, and DSTE should have their details uploaded through the cbate portal by December 30, 2023. Colleges will be notified when to make the payment for these trainees.

Registration fees for DPTE, DSTE, DECTE, and Upgrade courses are specified, with different fee structures for regular candidates and those re-sitting the assessments.

Registration fees for other teacher education programs remain as stated in the User guide for the Management of Teacher Education Examinations 1st Edition 2018.

Payment of Registration Fees:

After registration, Principals are expected to generate invoices as evidence of payment for the examinations/assessments.

You can make payments into KNEC Fee Collection Accounts at selected banks, which include Co-operative Bank, National Bank of Kenya, Kenya Commercial Bank, and Equity Bank.

Special Needs Candidates:

Institutions must also provide a medical report from a government hospital. It must indicate the nature and extent of disability for candidates with special needs during the registration process.

KNEC will also assess each case individually.

Submission of Registration Materials:

Please submit registration materials, including nominal rolls, fee payment deposit slips, and corresponding invoices, to the Teacher Education Examination Management Services office at New Mitihani House South C (Nairobi) by the END of examination’s registration period on November 30, 2023.

This circular aims to provide clear guidelines for the registration of teacher trainees for the 2024 teacher education examinations and assessments.

KNEC urges Principals of Teacher Training Colleges and Sub-County Adult and Continuing Education Officers to follow these instructions to facilitate a smooth registration process.
