KNEC Allows KPSEA Registration of Grade Six Learners Without Assessment Numbers

Grade six learners without assessment numbers for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) scheduled for November can now be registered by schools.

Those who participated in School Based Assessments (SBA) in grades 4 and 5 but were not previously registered and had their scores unuploaded online are now eligible for registration for the grade 6 KPSEA exams.

Upon registration, the head of the institution is required to ensure that the learners’ SBA scores for grades 4 and 5 are uploaded.

The CEO of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) emphasized, “All eligible KPSEA candidates must be registered in the Grade 6 portal first in order to be assigned an Assessment Number. The Assessment number is mandatory for registration. Upon registration, the head of the institution must make sure that the learners’ SBA scores for Grades 4 and 5 are uploaded.”

In January, KNEC issued a circular guiding schools on the registration of learners for the KPSEA and KILEA exams.

Heads of institutions with learners following the regular pathway were instructed to register their Grade 6 learners for KPSEA afresh, similar to the process in 2023. Registration for KPSEA will take place through the KPSEA Registration portal, accessible between January 29 and March 29, 2024.

Candidates presented for the assessment are the eligible learners who have been learning in their schools. Heads of institutions are expected to edit the candidates’ biodata for accuracy in the registration data.

This includes correcting spellings and the order of learners’ names as documented in their birth certificates, gender, year of birth, citizenship, religious education option registered for, and the category of special needs and disabilities (where applicable).

Transfers of candidates are only permitted during the registration period. After the closure of the exercise, transfers will not be allowed, and the process must be completed online to prevent duplication of candidates.

Schools with fewer than five candidates are not permitted to register candidates for the 2024 KPSEA as independent assessment centers. Such schools should coordinate with their respective Sub-County Directors of Education (SCDEs) to identify an approved KNEC assessment center with more than five candidates for their learners’ registration.

Assessment centers with less than thirty candidates will be hosted in assessment centers identified by the SCDEs, following KNEC guidelines. Once the registration exercise is complete, KNEC will release the KPSEA timetable for the 2024 candidates.

In the previous year, a total of 1,282,574 candidates sat for the KPSEA exams. These candidates were allowed to join Grade 7 in Junior Secondary Schools hosted by their respective primary schools where they attended Grade 1-6.
