Kisii County Launches Sh.145 Million Bursary Fund for Students
On Friday, Governor Simba Arati of Kisii presided over the inauguration and distribution of the County Bursary Fund, totaling Sh. 145 million, to selected beneficiaries in the county’s 45 wards.
Arati reported at the inauguration event held at Gusii Stadium that the county has been without a bursary fund for the past four years due to the alleged diversion of bursary funds by the previous administration.
The Governor commended the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) for securing funding for the bursary by including it in the Supplemental Budget for the 2022/2023 fiscal year.
The county administrator stated that the bursary was intended to assist needy students and that education is a powerful equalizer that enables even the poorest of the impoverished to climb the socioeconomic, political, and leadership ladders.
He acknowledged the efforts of the county officials, including the Deputy Governor, CECMs, and Chief Officers, which resulted in a number of children who had been displaced due to financial difficulties being reunited through the personal donations of the leaders.
Arati stated that each ward had been allocated 3 million Kenyan shillings and that the execution of the funds was conducted transparently with the assistance of the MCAs.
He also stated that his administration will allocate an additional 5 million Kenyan shillings in future budgets.
In addition, the Governor stated that he supervised the distribution of bursary applications in all divisions, collaborating with National Government Administration officials in an effort to promote order and transparency.
Further, he stated that his administration will send the funds directly to the school fees accounts of the 1,250 beneficiary schools in order to prevent any form of mischief or deception involving the distribution of the funds.
“I challenge the benefiting students to work diligently and post impressive academic performance as this is the only way that we can realize value for the bursary programme,” the County Boss said.
In an effort to improve the education sector in the county, Arati stated that they intend to hire Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) instructors on permanent contracts, modernize the ECDE centers, and restructure the Vocational Training Centres so that students have access to a quality education.
