KICD Releases New KCSE Set Books For Secondary School
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) announced that it has completed the review of new set books that will be studied by senior high school students from 2022 to 2026.
KICD revealed the set books that will be tackled in high school for literature in English and Kiswahili.
Students will now study Fathers of Nations, a novel, instead of Blossoms of the Savannah for the required literature set books.
According to KICD’s statement released on Thursday, January 13, 2022, for the mandatory play, students will read The Samaritan by John Lara, which will replace A Doll’s House by Henry Ibsen.
For the optional set books, students will read Kazuo Ishiguro’s Artist of the Floating World. It will take the place of Jon Steinbeck’s The Pearly.
The other optional book will be in the category of anthologies of short stories, where students can choose to study A Silent Song and Other Stories edited by Godwin Sundu. This is a replacement for Chris Wanjala’s Memories We Lost.
Students will read A Parliament of Owls by Adipo Sidang instead of Inheritance by David Mulwa for an optional play.
KICD announced that students will now study Bembea by Dr Timothy Moriasi instead of Kigogo by Pauline Kea Kyovi for their Kiswahili novel Tamthilia.
Mapambazuko ya Machweo na Hadithi Nyingine was approved by KICD for short stories, replacing Tumbo Lisiloshiba na Hadithi Zingine.

This means that when schools reopen for the first term in May 2022, parents will have to purchase a new set books.
Notably, this will be the shortest term on the school calendar this year, lasting nine weeks.
Schools will close in the first week of March to allow for the KCPE and KCSE exams, which begin on March 4 and 11, respectively.
