In exchange, the conmen promised to give the teachers with a T-shirt and badge which will allow them to access the training facility.

“The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) wishes to inform teachers and the general public that there is false information being peddled by conmen, deceiving unsuspecting people of training at the Institute on various dates, notably 6th January 2023.

"The unscrupulous persons are mostly targeting teachers and directing them to register with Ksh1,000 for the purchase of a T-shirt and a badge as they attend the training. The act constitutes fraud punishable by law,” read the statement in part.

KICD cautioned teachers and the general public by not to fall prey to any training that requires participants to pay a fee.

“KICD has not organised any such training of teachers, neither has it requested teachers to register with money for such an activity.

"The public is, therefore, requested to be extra vigilant and report such cases to the nearest police station,” added the statement

Prior to releasing the teacher-training calendar, KICD is renowned for informing the public via its official website and social media outlets.

The scam came two months after St Teresa Girls Yala cautioned parents against giving money to fraudsters who started phoning them after illegally obtaining school fees information. The school management asserted that the scammers posed as Ministry of Education employees in the November 2022 incident before fleeing with a visitor’s book including the names and phone numbers of parents.

“People in the white saloon claiming to be from the education office were here. Kindly note and spread the news.

“They may want to use it to con parents. A parent has already been conned Ksh9,000,” read the statement at the time.
