Parents of learners enrolled in the first junior secondary school (JSS) have reason to rejoice after the government assured them of support in supplying study materials in all subject areas.

JSS learners in all public schools will receive textbooks for all 12 required subjects and four optional learning areas, according to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), which is responsible for the evaluation and procurement of all curriculum materials.

Charles Ong’ondo, the head of KICD, said that the government will make sure that learning materials are ready before schools start on January 23.

Prof. Ong’ondo emphasized that workbooks will not be included in the government’s plan to supply a book for every learner in every subject beginning on January 30.

He claimed that even if the government purchases the books, it will not restrict schools to required text books.

“The other books will still be available to the learners to buy because the other books we have approved are also okay,” he said.

“As a measure of safeguarding parents, we encourage schools to only buy one textbook and if they need more, they just use them as reference because they are drawn from the same curriculum design.”

He said that the government chose the lowest bidder in each subject area to supply public schools all over the country.

Ong’ondo stated that the course books will include teacher’s guides and will also be customized for learners with special needs.

Maths, English, Kiswahili, Integrated Science, Home Science, Visual Art, Performing Arts, Social Studies, Religious Education, and Foreign Languages are the 12 key learning areas for junior secondary school.

The delay in the distribution of textbooks for the first class, according to Ong’ondo, was caused by the debate about the location of JSS.

The government, according to him, has already engaged with the publishers to supply the books by the end of January.

The government, according to him, has already engaged with the publishers to supply the books by the end of January.

Based on student statistics from the ministry, he said, the books will be provided to schools.

He stated that during the transition phase, some learners may transfer from one school to another and urged principals to provide accurate information in a timely manner.

According to Ong’ondo, the movement of learners in schools is sometimes a challenge since “headteachers delay in feeding us with the change in the number so that we can adjust the number of books”

He added that the institution may have difficulty obtaining accurate data due to the transfer of learners following the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in an influx in public schools.

Roots, Spotlight, Mountain Top Publishers, Oxford, EAEP, and Moran Publishers are the publishers of the English course books that were chosen.

EAEP, Moran, Pezi, and Kenya Literature Bureau  (KLB) have produced four books in Kiswahili that are recommended.

Distinction, Story Moja, and Mountain Top Publishers all publish books that are recommended for Home Science.

Schools would be required to select from among eight books from KLB, Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF), Evangel, MTP, Moran, Pezi, Spear, and Story Moja in the area of agriculture.

Eight works from Pezi, EAEP, Bookmark, Distinction Publishers, MTP, Story Moja, Oxford, and Malezi will be included in Integrated Science.

Life Skills has five recommended text books, Mathematics has six, just like Religious Education, and Visual Arts has two, exactly like Physical Education, Social Studies, Performing Arts, and Pre-Technical Studies.

Health Education will have four, Business Studies will have five, and Computer Science will have three.

Visual Arts students will utilize either the KLB or JKF recommended text. One textbook is recommended for learners of French and Physical Education & Sports.

Two books will be provided for Social Studies.

Learners in Health Education will have a choice of four textbooks, while those in Performing Arts will have access to three and those in Business Studies will have access to two.

Two recommended textbooks cover technical areas.
