Kiambu to Host Annual National Teachers Championships
National Teachers Championships, organized by the Kenya Teachers Games Association, will hold its fourth edition at Alliance High School, Kiambu, from April 22-25.
The association’s chairman, George Makheti, expects over 500 participants from various regions in Kenya to compete in the event. The competition will feature 16 teams divided into four groups, with Kwale looking to defend their title in group C.
The objective of the competition is to keep teachers fit, promote bonding and familiarity among teachers, and encourage students to balance academics and sports while abstaining from negative social vices.
Makheti expressed the association’s intention to introduce women into the competition and include other disciplines to make it an all-inclusive championship.
CIC insurance and KUPPET are among the sponsors of the championship, and the organizers hope more corporates will support the initiative. Hosting the tournament twice last year was a stroke of luck, but the association seeks to make it an annual assignment.
Makheti believes that the competition helps teachers to become better role models for students by keeping them physically active and healthy. Additionally, teachers from different schools can network and build relationships that can help in their profession.
The competition’s success has prompted the association to consider expanding it to include more games and disciplines to increase its inclusivity.
