Khasoko Boys Student Dies Following Illness Outbreak, School Closed
Khasoko Boys School, situated in Bumula Constituency, Bungoma County, has been shut down indefinitely by the school board after an unknown illness outbreak resulted in the death of a student.
The Ministry of Health in Bungoma County is currently investigating the outbreak and has initiated comprehensive health assessments of the affected students and staff members.
The outbreak first came to light on May 17, when a student fell ill and sought medical attention.
The initial diagnosis indicated malaria, and the student was treated and subsequently returned to school.
However, on May 18, the student’s condition worsened, leading to admission to the hospital, albeit in a stable state.
Unfortunately, on the night of May 19, the student was transferred to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital (BCRCH) for further management.
Tragically, before any specimen could be taken for analysis, the student passed away on May 20.

Symptoms and Treatment:
Following the initial case, approximately 47 students at Khasoko Boys School reported experiencing malaria-like symptoms.
Among them, two students complained of abdominal pains, prompting their transfer to Bumula for medical attention.
Out of the total number of students reporting symptoms, only six tested positive for malaria and subsequently received treatment before returning to school.
School Closure Decision:
In light of the escalating situation, the school board convened a meeting where the director of education made the decision to close down Khasoko Boys School.
The closure is intended to allow for a thorough investigation into the outbreak and to ensure the safety and well-being of the remaining students and staff members.
