The Kenyatta family, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his mother Mama Ngina Kenyatta, is well known for its extensive investments, including in education.

Among the investments is the Peponi Group of Schools, which is one of Kenya’s most expensive schools.

Teachersupdates.co.ke takes a look inside the Kenyatta Family-owned Peponi School in this segment.

The school made national headlines in 2020 after it was revealed how much students at the school pay in fees each year.

It is located along the Thika Superhighway in Ruiru, at the Kenyatta family-owned Gicheha farm, which has now been renamed Northlands City.

A parent who chooses to send their child to Peponi School will pay Ksh3.3 million per year for a full border, or Ksh1.1 million per term.

According to the school’s official website, weekly boarders pay Ksh1.05 million per term and day scholars pay Ksh731,510.

“The School shall charge fees as per the fee structure issued at the beginning of every year and/or at the date of the first admission.

"The School shall increase the fees annually and notices duly issued to the parents,” the school notes.

School fees must be paid by the first day of each term. Fees that are not paid within 14 days will be subject to a 3% monthly surcharge.

“The School reserves the right to return a pupil home should the fees not be paid by the 14th day,” parents are advised.

Peponi School was founded in 1989.

It provides a variety of extracurricular activities and employs outside tutors to promote karate, taekwondo, trampolining, chess, and even pottery.

Swimming and tennis are among the activities that take place in the main school facilities. A world-class orchestra is part of the music department.

The headteacher, Mark Durston, is responsible for all members of the school community. Joseph Njuguna seconded him.

Njuguna is in charge of pastoral care at the School, particularly boarding, as well as leading the housemasters and housemistresses, monitoring students’ behavior, and maintaining day-to-day procedures.
