Kenyatta Appoints New KNEC Chairperson
Maseno University Vice-Chancellor Prof Julius Nyabundi has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Kenya National Examination Council by President Uhuru Kenyatta (KNEC).
Nyabundi’s appointment was gazetted on Friday, July 7, with his tenure beginning on Tuesday, July 5.
The new KNEC CEO will serve in that capacity for four years.
“In exercise of the powers conferred to me by section 5 (1) of the Kenya National Examinations Council Act, 2012, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint— Julius Nyabudi as KNEC chair,” read the notice in part.
Nyabundi took over for Prof John Osati, who took over in 2019 after his predecessor, George Magoha, was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Education.
Nyabundi will be in charge of preparing for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), and Grade Six examinations, which are scheduled for November this year.
This Grade Six examination will be the first national examination for candidates who will be starting junior high school.
Following his appointment in 2021, Nyabundi will work alongside David Njeng’ere, who will serve as CEO.
Prior to being appointed as KNEC chair, the scholar was Vice-Chancellor of Maseno University from 2016 to 2017, a position he obtained after working in various government agencies.
Prof. Nyabundi is the former Principal of Muranga University College and the former Acting Vice-Chancellor (A&F) of Maseno University. He previously held the position of Managing Director at Chemelil Sugar Company.
