Millicent Cassianes, a teacher at BL Tezza Complex Primary School in Kenya, has earned a nomination for the prestigious Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2023.

Her selection came after a rigorous process that saw her stand out from over 7,000 nominees and applicants representing more than 130 countries, all vying for the esteemed $1 million USD prize.

The Varkey Foundation website states that it highlights the significance of educators and emphasizes that their efforts deserve recognition and celebration worldwide.

The website states, “It seeks to recognize the impact of the very best teachers, not only on their students but also on the surrounding communities.”

Millicent has worked with special needs students ever since starting her job with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

After encountering students with severe hearing loss and infections at an orphanage, she decided to receive hospital training in how to care for those with support needs.

After enrolling in Kenyan Sign Language classes, Millicent enrolled in the BL Tezza Special School for the Deaf.

Instructors of online courses and adjunct professors are also eligible to apply.
