Kenya Short Of More Than 100,000 Teachers – TSC
According to the TSC, schools are short of more than 100,000 teachers.
Nancy Macharia, the chief executive officer of the Teachers Service Commission, spoke on Monday as she officiated the start of the KCSE exams in Kilifi North.
She claimed that the shortage is the result of government underfunding.
“The government gives us money to hire about 5,000 teachers a year. When we advertise for vacancies we get overwhelming applications but our hands are tied,” Macharia said.
The TSC’s executive director stated that the commission is using interns as a stopgap measure to bridge the gap.
She stated that the positions are distributed equitably by the commission.
Owen Baya, MP for Kilifi North, has been advocating for affirmative action in the hiring of teachers in Kilifi County.
He claims that Kilifi North alone has a teacher shortage of 2,000 in both primary and secondary schools.
The lack of teachers, according to the MP, will jeopardize the county’s competence-based curriculum’s success.
“8-4-4 messed the education system in Kenya. CBC is here to fix it but as a county we may not get the intended results.
According to Baya, education in the county is expensive because parents must hire teachers through the board of management.
“Our students may not compete fairly with other regions because we have a big shortage of teachers. To make this a success we need more teachers,” he said
He stated that a school such as Bahari Girls’ National School employs ten teachers who are paid by parents.

“If a national school has such a big deficit what about the extra county schools,” he said.
According to the legislator, the burden of hiring teachers has now been shifted to parents.
“This should be a wakeup call to TSC to employ more teachers in Kilifi,” he said.
TSC, according to Macharia, is working to ensure that the 100,000 deficit is addressed for efficiency in the Ministry of Education and that the Competency-based Curriculum (CBC) is effective.
