Kenya Invests KSh 51 Billion in Textbooks for CBC.
Kenya has invested a significant KSh 51 billion in the procurement of textbooks for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), according to Charles Ong’ondo.
During a recent CBC engagement, he highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to ensure adequate textbook distribution, emphasizing that the government has made notable progress in improving education resources.
He pointed out that for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), each learning area is being supplied with two different titles, allowing for a wider range of teaching materials and promoting flexibility in teaching.
Ong’ondo noted that this effort is part of a global curriculum reform cycle, as defined by UNESCO, where a review of educational content is conducted every five years.

He acknowledged the remarkable strides the country has made in implementing CBC, aligning it with internationally recognized educational standards.
Teacher Education Transformation
In addition to textbook distribution, Ong’ondo shared that the curriculum reform has been extended to teacher education.
One of the key milestones achieved in this transformation is the transition from certificate-level teacher training to diploma-level qualifications for educators at all levels—pre-primary, primary, and secondary.
This shift, he explained, ensures that teachers are more adequately trained and qualified to meet global standards, as education specialists agree that certificate-level teachers are typically expected to serve as teacher assistants rather than fully-fledged educators.
Payment to Publishers Confirmed
In his remarks, Ong’ondo also confirmed that the government has made all necessary payments to publishers for textbooks delivered since 2018.
A total of KSh 47 billion has been disbursed to publishers for textbooks that have already reached schools.

The Chairman of the Publishers Association, who was present at the event, verified that all payments have been received for the books delivered, marking a successful collaboration between the government and the publishing sector.
Ong’ondo concluded by praising the country’s achievements in both textbook distribution and teacher education reform, underscoring the significant progress made toward improving Kenya’s education system.
