Kenya, Canada Partner for Youth Employment in Blue Economy
The Kenya Education for Employment (KEFEP) is a joint effort between the governments of Kenya and Canada to educate the youth in Kenya on blue economy courses.
The program is aimed at improving the technical and vocational education and training in Kenya, and is funded by the government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada.
The Canadian government has committed to invest Sh. 2 billion into the Kenya Blue Economy Skills Training program, which will take place at the Coast National Polytechnic in Mombasa.
This investment is expected to support economic diversification in Kenya and provide opportunities for students to apply for jobs abroad after completion of their studies.
Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Alfred Mutua, expressed his excitement about the program and noted that it was a bilateral project funded by both countries. He also mentioned his plans to visit Canada to discuss further opportunities for the program.
The Kenya government is putting emphasis on empowering TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) institutions by strengthening them across the country.
All students training under the KEFEP program will be assisted by the government in securing jobs in Canada and other countries abroad.
The Canadian Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, Warren Mucci, expressed his support for the partnership between the two countries and noted that more investments would come out of their good working relationship.
He emphasized the need for both countries to support each other and succeed together, as they both need quality manpower to build the blue economy sector.
The government’s emphasis on empowering TVET institutions and the support from the Canadian government will help in achieving this goal.
The good working relationship between the two countries bodes well for future investments in Kenya, and the success of the blue economy sector as a whole.
