On Wednesday, the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu held talks with a delegation from the National University Commission of Nigeria at Jogoo House. The delegation was led by Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, and the purpose of the meeting was to strengthen the relationship between Kenya and Nigeria.

Machogu emphasized that the two countries shared many similarities and the need to collaborate to find solutions to common problems affecting higher education in Africa.

The CS noted that Kenya is in the process of transitioning from the 8-4-4 education system to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) system. This system provides continuous assessment for learners in their skills and competencies.

He further added that the government aims to ensure that certificates issued in Kenya meet internationally recognized standards and enable graduates to acquire the necessary skills and competencies to practice worldwide.

Machogu acknowledged that Kenya is currently experiencing challenges with university funding and governance. However, the government is developing a framework to ensure sustainability in universities.

Plans are also underway to establish an Open University in Kenya, and the CS believes that Kenya can learn from Nigeria’s management of the Open University learning.

During the meeting, Prof. Rasheed briefed the CS on the education system in Nigeria. The delegation was in Kenya to engage with various higher education stakeholders, compare notes, and identify areas of common interest that could strengthen ties between the two countries in education.

The delegation will also visit selected public universities and semi-autonomous government agencies under the Ministry of Education.

Present at the meeting were the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the CEO Commission for University Education (CUE) Prof. Mike Kuria, CUE Chairman Prof. Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha, and Higher Education Director Dairus Ogutu Mogaka.
