Kenya Achieves Almost 100% Transition to Junior High and Secondary Schools
In the current academic year, a significant number of pupils in Kenya have successfully transitioned to Junior Secondary School (JSS).
A total of 1,236,156 pupils have successfully transitioned to JSS this academic year. Among them, 641,270 are boys, while 625,518 are girls.
The pupils have been admitted to a combination of public and private institutions.
Specifically, 984,622 students have joined public schools, while 278,534 have been admitted to private schools.
The Ministry of Interior has reported that five out of the eight regions in Kenya have either met or exceeded their JSS transitioning targets.
The region of Nyanza is leading the way with an impressive 102 percent transition rate, closely followed by Central Kenya and North Eastern, each with a rate of 101 percent.
Nairobi and Eastern regions have achieved a perfect 100 percent transition rate.
The Coast, Western Kenya, and the Rift Valley regions have accomplished 99 percent, 97 percent, and 95 percent transition rates, respectively.
Form One Enrollment and Vocational Training
As part of the transition process, 1,154,246 JSS students have also successfully switched to Form One, the next level of secondary education.
Additionally, an encouraging number of 15,874 learners have enrolled in vocational training programs.
The Ministry of Interior reports that all learners in the North Eastern region have successfully reported to high school, while Nairobi and Central regions have achieved a 99 percent transition rate.
Western, Nyanza, and Coast regions have accomplished a 98 percent Form One enrollment rate, and the Rift Valley region stands at 92 percent.
The 100 Percent Transition Policy
The government of Kenya introduced the 100 percent transition policy to address the education gap, particularly for marginalized and underprivileged children.
This policy aims to ensure that every pupil successfully transitions from primary to secondary school.
To enforce this policy, the government assigned government administrators who possess a deep understanding of grassroots social structures and have a significant influence within their respective areas.
