KCPE Students That Are Never Placed In Secondary Schools.
The Ministry of Education has explained why a subset of students who take the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) are never placed in high schools.
Julius Jwan, the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, stated that the government did not place 4,334 KCPE candidates who took their exams this year in high schools.
Because the students took their exams in prisons or as private candidates, the government is unable to place them in secondary schools.
So far, 1,209,697 candidates have been placed in high schools, according to the Ministry of Education. The PS did not provide a path forward for students who did not secure a spot in high school.
After scoring 402 on the KCPE exams, an inmate at the Kakamega Women’s Prison made headlines. Amelia Jacobeth Liabule faces a prison sentence on a murder charge.
A 28-year-old inmate at the Manyani Maximum Security Prison in Taita Taveta who scored 401 on the KCPE exams made headlines as well.
Juma Nyasi was acquitted by the High Court after new evidence revealed that he had been wrongfully convicted.

Nyasi took the KCPE for the second time. He told the press that due to a lack of school fees, he was forced to drop out of secondary school in Form Two.
While these inmates’ futures are in jeopardy, top KCPE candidates who scored between 425 and 428 were placed in national schools.
